Ride to Featherly Park
October 4, 2008
Were off and biking to Featherly Park. Below
are some guide lines with directions and instruction. We will also
discuss this again on Monday.
This 10 or 12 mile ride is relatively easy. Most of the trek will be
on a paved bike path along the Santa Ana River. At the 5 mile point
those scouts that want to go into Canyon RV park where lunch will be
provided may. Adult supervision will always be with both groups. We
will also be hosting PACK 589 of Brea along this trek. This will
fulfill one of their requirements for Arrow of Light by
participating in a local BSA Troop outing. There will be an
additional 7 Weblos and 3-4 adults from Pack 589.
From the 5 mile point, those scouts that want to continue, we will
take them into the North East part of Featherly Park. The path will
change from paved to a gravel dirt road. We will endure true
mountain bike trails along with some gravel, hills and possible mud.
We will ride right up to the edge of the river and observe and
discuss evidence of the rivers natural wildlife. This will be an
additional 2 mile trek. A bike with alternative gears is highly
recommended.
Rank Requirements that could get signed off are-
Tenderfoot - #5 and # 9
Second Class - #1a - #1b - #2a - #5 - #6b
First Class - #6 -
From here we will head back to Canyon RV park and meet up with the
Weblos and other scouts for lunch. After lunch a orienteering course
will be given by Daryl Cousins of the Orange County BSA Council. A
cost for each scout to enter the RV park is $2. This will be
collected from each scout prior to departure.
After that we will have access to the parks pool for a brief cooling
off and fun in the sun. Then it is back on the bikes to head back to
Keno's. We should be back at the parking lot no later than 3:30 or
4:00.
A support group of cars and parents will be securing our camp site
for lunch and the orienteering course.
If the scouts plan on swimming they must bring the own swim suit and
towel separate. We would prefer they not wear their suit while
riding their bikes. Proper clothing on this trek is necessary. We
will provide one of the support cars at the starting drop off point
to transport the suits and towels, or the scout may carry it with
them in their backpacks. Please bag and label your own suit to avoid
confusion.
Each rider must carry on them (preferable in a small back pack)
their 10 essentials. Water, sun block, small first aid kit, compass,
pocketknife, poncho, etc.

Located in Santa Ana Canyon, almost all of Featherly Regional Park
is a natural riparian wilderness area; public access is restricted
and viewing opportunities are best from the Santa Ana River Bikeway
which runs adjacent to the park.
The only developed portion of the park is Canyon R.V. Park, a
privately-operated facility. It offers RV sites with full hook-ups,
small cabins, youth group camping and areas for group events. Canyon
RV Park’s entrance is at Gypsum Canyon Road and the 91 Freeway. Call
